MEMORIAL MONUMENT ASSOCIATION NORMANDY 44 - 90th US DIVISION PÉRIERS EN COTENTIN - NORMANDY - FRANCE
Subscription Form
On July 27, 1944, the U.S. 90th Infantry Division liberated the town of Périers in Normandy, France. The first troops had landed on D-Day (June 6, 1944) at Utah Beach, and for seven bloody weeks were mired down in difficult and deadly hedgerow warfare. After liberating Périers, the 90th went on to fight all the way to Czechoslovakia, where they arrived in May 1945.
The cost of the 90th’s long battle to liberate Europe was heavy : 3,871 men dead and another 21,000 wounded. The people of Périers have never forgotten their sacrifice. Over the years, they have welcomed countless Veterans and their families to their town, taking them into their homes and forging friendships that have endured for decades. This tradition has made Périers a primary destination for U.S. Veterans making pilgrimages to Europe to rediscover the places where, as young men, they fought for freedom.
To perpetuate the memory of these men, Périers resident Henri Levaufre, Lt. General Orwin Talbott (Commander of a 90th Division rifle company, he was wounded in the fight for Périers), Lt. Col. Edward S. Hamilton (a 90th battalion Commander also wounded in Normandy) and a number of other French and Americans launched the Normandy 44 - 90eme Division US Association. The primary purpose of this body is to construct a Monument that will bear witness to the sacrifices of the 90th for generations to come. Located in the heart of Périers, the Monument will be inaugurated in June 2000 in the presence of Veterans and distinguished international personalities.
The total cost of this project is estimated to be $24,000. It is the Association’s wish that as many people as possible, in France as well as in the United States, be allowed to contribute ; in this way, the Monument will genuinely express the gratitude of all those who owe their freedom to the brave young soldiers who risked their lives so long ago. All contributions, no matter how modest, are therefore welcome.
You can join us in honoring the men of the 90th by mailing in the attached form along with your tax deductible donation
Your name, along with those of all other contributors, will be inscribed in a book that will be placed in a sealed container and enclosed in the Monument.
