Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous Informations during the 4th Term of 98 :
While staying in the United States a few weeks ago, Henri Levaufre got very cheerful first answers from his
numerous touches.
- Early September 1998 : Mrs Karen Taylor, France-Magazine editor at the
French Embassy in Washington DC, sent to numerous papers a dispatch telling about the Association and its Project
for a Monument. On September 14th was the article published at the front page of the STARS & STRIPES paper.
- September 10th, 1998 : Meeting between H. Levaufre and a reporter from
daily paper USA TODAY. That same day, interview by the Publicity Department of the French Embassy in Washington
DC : In front of an audience composed of various people such as General Talbott (our Honorary Chairman in the United
States) Mrs Karen Taylor, Mrs Catherine Rabet (Press attaché), Mrs Anne Volpert (in charge of the Web),
Mrs Jocelyne Zieman, Chief of the editorial staff of the bimonthly "News from France", Henri Levaufre
gave a detailed account of NORMANDY 44 and showed off his plans : Monument, Book and Memorial Center. Every present
person then committed to make our Association known and its plans promoted as much through the Embassy Publicity
Department as through sustained touches with the US press.
- Mrs Karen Taylor offered to act as our kindly Public Relation with Veterans and
American authorities and to ease relationship with media.
N.B. : There must be no confusion in minds, even if the Publicity Department of the French Embassy in
Washington DC (France-Magazine, News from France and Web) is willing to help us, the French Embassy itself cannot
officially support non governmental plans. So one must never boast about a support from the French Embassy itself.
- September 12th and October 14th, 1998 : Many important people meet at
Colonel Edward Hamilton’s home. Colonel Hamilton makes the whole audience aware of the project.
- September 17th, 18th and 19th, 1998 : In Fort Worth (Texas), Henri Levaufre
attends the Annual Reunion of the 90th Division Veterans Association. assiste à Fort Worth Texas au congrès
annuel de l'association des Anciens Combattants de la 90ème Division. All along those 3 days, were the sketches
and schemes for the Monument displayed and explained to the audience.
- Mr William Gassman, son of Captain William C. Gassman KIA in February 1945, suggested to interest
children of 90th Veterans in our plans. Mr Gassman, working as a highschool headmaster in Aiken (South-Carolina)
also proposed to set up a mail exchange between his school and the one in Périers. Today, a first connection
has already been linked between these two educational bodies.
- Having informed him about our plans, we received from Steven Spielberg’s secretarial
office a warm and heartening letter of congratulations dated November 18th, 1998.
- After having worked hundreds of hours, we open on December 19th our Web Site at
URL : http://assoc.wanadoo.fr/normandy44-90div.us/
- We must here pay a special tribute to François LEVAUFRE who kindly offered
and his skill and a lot of his time to serve our plans. We owe him the whole achievement (not yet !) of this site
that will later be connected to the one the Publicity Department of the French embassy in Washington DC want to
open for the Association.
- A mailbox was opened on October 24th, 1998 at following e-mail address normandy44.90us@wanadoo.fr
